Oval or Round Window Plugging

Oval or round window plugging is a stabilizing procedure sometimes used to repair perilymph fistulas to stop leaking of perilymph fluid. Local or general anesthesia can be used. The middle ear is entered with a transcanal approach. Openings in the oval and/or round windows are patched with tissue taken from the external ear or behind the ear so the perilymph fluid does not leak through the fistulas.

This operation requires a long post-surgical period with extreme activity restriction to help ensure the graft is successful. Possible bad outcomes include a potential for hearing loss and worsening of symptoms.
