Compensatory Strategies for Daily Activities
Below are some helpful strategies to create an environment that allows people living with memory changes and/or dementia to feel independent and supported.
GOLDEN RULE - Establish a routine:
- Utilize routine reminder systems with visual cues, such as a white board or calendar.
- Start a memory journal to record daily activities and other important information.
- Utilize a digital memory loss clock to help with orientation.
Medication Compliance:
- Utilize a pill planner or dispenser.
- Ask your pharmacy about medication blister packs.
- Plan for a reminder phone call from family or friends.
- Enlist help from a home health provider.
Financial Management:
- Transition all applicable bills to automatic payment.
- Have a family member or financial adviser oversee accounts.
Using the Telephone:
- Utilize speed dial.
- Screen/block spam phone calls.
- Make notes with simple instructions.
- Keep a notepad near the phone to take notes.
Activities (such as going for walks):
- Stay within familiar areas.
- Consider an identification bracelet or necklace.
- Download the Life360 app (if cell phone is carried) for location tracking.
- Consider a watch with GPS tracking capabilities or Life Alert System.
- Register with the Cedar Rapids Police Department through Home Again CR.
Grocery Shopping & Meal Prep:
- Make this a fun activity to do together as a bonding activity.
- Consider meal delivery services to make these tasks less stressful.
- Prep so food is accessible without requiring additional preparation.
- Enlist help from a private duty agency to help with shopping and meal prep.
Decision-Making:
- Monitor legal, financial and medical decisions closely.
- Appoint a financial and medical power of attorney.
