Mercy Medical Center and the Mercy Imaging Center - Hiawatha offer the latest medical imaging technology. This technology provides image quality that can diagnose a disease as small as a few millimeters in size. Mercy continues to utilize technology that provides a diagnostic study with a small amount of radiation exposure; some technologies, such as ultrasound and MRI, do not utilize radiation at all to produce an image.
Mercy performs more than 122,000 procedures per year. We work closely with Radiology Consultants of Iowa, a group of specialized radiologists, who interpret your exam results and provide an accurate diagnosis.
The Radiology Department complies with all of The Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditation (JCAHO) standards, the Nuclear Medicine Department is licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health, and our Ultrasound is accredited by the American College of Radiology – recognized as a Breast Center of Excellence.
There are many procedures we perform, but some of our most common are:
- CT Scan: Also known as a "C.A.T. scan", the CT scan is a valuable diagnostic tool.
- Mammography: An X-ray technique that's used to create an image of the breast.
- MRI: An extremely precise way to look inside the body without using X-rays.
- Nuclear Medicine: Using radioactive materials, nuclear medicine helps diagnose and treat a wide variety of diseases and disorders.
- PET/CT Scan: PET/CT scans produce pictures of metabolism and anatomy.
- Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses sound waves to obtain a medical image or picture of various organs and tissues in the body.
- X-ray: A medical procedure using X-rays that helps identify disease or injury inside the human body.
