How to Cope with Your Social Anxiety
When attending social gatherings, do you feel anxious about talking to others, very self-conscious and wish you weren’t there? You may have social anxiety.
What are the common symptoms of having social anxiety?
If you have social anxiety, you may feel these symptoms when in social situations:
- Blushing and sweaty
- High heart rate
- Very self-conscious
- Very afraid to talk to others or be judged
- Sick to your stomach
How do you cope with social anxiety?
If you think you have social anxiety and are worried about it advancing, learn how to cope with it as you receive treatment. To help your social anxiety, try:
- Breathing and meditation exercises
- Starting with small events
- Talking with your primary care provider about medications
- Visiting with a counselor or support groups
- Exercising regularly
- Thinking positively
Your social anxiety may be minor, or it may be severe, but it’s important that you don’t ignore your feelings and symptoms. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 7% of Americans are affected by social anxiety disorder; you are not alone.
