Do You Need a Mental Break?
Deadlines, meetings, e-mails, presentations, client calls. You may be thinking, “I don’t have time for a mental break, let alone a bathroom break.” It’s normal to assume putting your head down and not allowing distractions is the most efficient way to work. But, breaks throughout the day are better for your mental health and work production.
Working for long periods of time can lead to exhaustion and stress; mental breaks help reset workflow and energize morale. Only have a few moments to spare? No problem! Mental breaks can be as short as just a few minutes. For example:
- Get up from your desk and take a lap around the office.
- Stretch or do yoga to get your blood flowing.
- Meditate for a few minutes at your desk.
- Invite co-workers to grab a coffee with you.
- Avoid replying to emails after work hours.
- Re-fuel with a snack.
You may need a mental break if:
- It's hard to concentrate.
- You find yourself getting burned out.
- Simple or quick tasks are taking longer than usual to complete.
- You are just going through the motions.
- Your body is being physically affected by work through headaches, lack of sleep and/or fatigue.
