Donor Breast Milk

Donor breast milk is available to any hospitalized newborn who needs to be supplemented. A baby might need supplemental milk if he or she is losing weight or not breastfeeding, or if the mother’s milk supply is inadequate for the baby’s needs. In situations like these, families can choose between donor milk or formula to supplement the mother’s breast milk.

Can my baby receive donor milk?

Any hospitalized newborn is eligible to receive donor milk; the program is not limited to babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Newborns in Mercy’s Birthplace can also benefit from the Donor Milk Program.

How much does it cost?

There are no income requirements or insurance restrictions; the program is funded in full by Mercy and is available to patients at no charge.

Where does the donor milk come from?

The donor breast milk is supplied by University of Iowa Health Care’s Mother’s Milk Bank of Iowa.

How do I get donor milk?

Your Mercy nurse will help you determine whether donor milk is necessary for your newborn.
