Mercy & Alliant Energy light the night pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Join Mercy Medical Center and Alliant Energy as we illuminate the night in pink to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Thursday, October 3.
The annual Power of Pink event will feature a lighting ceremony, fireworks, live music by Alisabeth Von Presley, face painting, refreshments and giveaways, all in the name of promoting breast cancer awareness and encouraging early detection.
Throughout October, Mercy’s Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, hospital entrances, and key area around campus will shine bright in pink, a powerful visual reminder of the importance of breast health. The Alliant Energy Tower in downtown Cedar Rapids will also be illuminated in pink, using LED technology to illustrate their commitment to the cause throughout October.
Power of Pink festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. outside Hall-Perrine Cancer Center at 701 10th Street SE, where Alliant Energy will be giving away energy-saving pink LED light bulbs (while supplies last). Recipients are encouraged to light their porches pink during October to remind neighbors about the importance of breast cancer screenings. In addition, General Mills will give away cans of pink frosting (while supplies last) at the event.
At 7:15 p.m., a short program will lead into the official lighting of the cancer center and hospital. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display, celebrating the unity and commitment of the community in the fight against breast cancer.
Attendees can show their support by wearing their Especially for You® (EFY) race shirts from past events. This year’s EFY race participants will be able to pick up their race packets from 4 to 7 p.m., and EFY merchandise will be available for purchase on-site.
Proceeds from the race support the EFY Fund, which helps provide essential breast and gynecological cancer screenings and diagnostics — like mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds — for those who otherwise could not afford them.
