Mercy Cedar Rapids & PCI join forces to offer outpatient orthopedic surgery
Mercy Cedar Rapids and Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa (PCI) are announcing a new partnership to continue to meet the growing demand for outpatient-based care. Together, the organizations will provide orthopedic surgery services at Mercy’s Outpatient Surgery Center in Hiawatha. The joint venture is aimed at improving patient access, satisfaction and quality of care.
“We are pleased to be partnering with PCI orthopedics,” said Mercy President & CEO, Tim Charles. “The quality medical care provided in Cedar Rapids is nationally recognized for being among the best of the best. This partnership provides a platform to evolve innovative surgical services in our community.”
Orthopedics – like many other types of surgery – has seen growth in the number of patients in the outpatient setting due, in part, to its convenience for patients and procedural advancements that make it less invasive. In fact, more than 3,500 outpatient orthopedic cases are performed in the Cedar Rapids community each year. In anticipation of this shifting environment, Mercy built its new Outpatient Surgery Center in Hiawatha in 2017. Just recently, the hospital added five additional operating room (OR) suites equipped with the latest technology.
“Mercy and PCI orthopedics are joining together in offering convenient, cost-effective surgery in a free-standing facility attached to an Emergency Room with full emergency capabilities, providing patients extra peace of mind,” said Nathan Van Genderen, Mercy executive vice president and chief financial officer.
“For years, PCI orthopedic surgeons have been performing technologically advanced, minimally invasive procedures right here in Cedar Rapids,” said Sandeep Munjal, MD, FAAOS, chair of PCI’s Bone, Joint & Sports Medicine/Orthopedics Center. “We are pleased to partner with Mercy’s Outpatient Surgery Center to provide another convenient location for innovative outpatient orthopedic surgery.”
The recent addition of the five OR suites includes larger rooms with air filtration/pressure systems that have been shown to reduce contamination and risk of infections; specialized lighting to optimize the visual field; and a design that allows for optimal workflow and efficiency.
Orthopedic surgery services are expected to begin at the Mercy Outpatient Surgery Center in July 2021.
