Especially for You® Race Against Breast Cancer readies for race registration
Online poll to select race T-shirt color begins April 22
Registration for the 31st annual Especially for You® (EFY) Race Against Breast Cancer will open on Sat., May 1, at www.especiallyforyourace.org. Race day is Sunday, Oct. 3.
The EFY race committee is in the process of determining whether the event will be held in-person or virtually. That decision will be announced at a later date. Organizers say that, whatever form the race takes, EFY will stay true to its mission to help local individuals in need get the services they need.
“This past year has been challenging, and individuals in our community need help now more than ever,” said Dr. Vincent Reid, medical director at Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. “We look forward to supporting and honoring those who have fought the disease, as well as those individuals currently battling breast cancer. Our goal is to celebrate the amazing sense of community that our race represents, while we continue to raise funds for breast care and gynecological cancer services.”
Race registration proceeds provide financial assistance for breast care and gynecological cancer services to local individuals. The EFY Fund covers breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer services at participating local medical providers. Throughout the years, the EFY fund has helped more than 11,000 individuals access more than 26,000 services.
Race T-shirt color will be selected by popular vote
Beginning Thurs., April 22, those interested in helping to determine the color of this year’s race T-shirt can click on a link on the EFY website, as well as EFY and Mercy social media pages, to cast their vote. This year’s color choices are Flo Blue, Pastel Blue and Black. Voting ends April 29. The winning color will be announced on the EFY website and respective social media pages.
Mercy Medical Center and General Mills are co-founders of the EFY Race. The race and the EFY Fund are dedicated to the memory of Sandy Knight, a Whittier resident and General Mills employee who died of breast cancer in July 1991. She helped organize Mercy’s Especially for You After Breast Cancer Support Group. Her dream was to establish a race to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and education, which was the catalyst for the first EFY Race.
