Mercy Pediatric Clinic launches free book program
Mercy Pediatric Clinic recently launched Reach Out and Read®, a national program that partners with medical providers to ensure success in school for America’s children. The clinic started handing out books in late June through the program, which provides free books to children between the ages of six months and five years at well-child visits.
“Reach Out and Read is a great way for Mercy to help boost literacy in our community and encourage parents to read with their children,” said Mercy Pediatric Clinic Nurse Practitioner Rachel Francois, who led the initiative. “Our goal is to encourage a passion for reading for all ages, and this program is proven to increase vocabulary and school readiness.”
While the books, including some bilingual titles, will be on display in the clinic, Pediatric Clinic providers have been trained to select age-appropriate books for their patients. All clinic staff members also received training on the importance of the program.
