General surgery clinic opens on Mercy campus
Mercy Medical Center is pleased to provide the community with the services of a newly established, Cedar Rapids-based general surgery clinic. The Mercy General Surgery Clinic is a collaborative initiative between Mercy and UI Health Care, and is comprised of University of Iowa surgical faculty members. This new clinic will be located in the 8th and 8th Medical Office Building on the Mercy campus. It will officially open January 10.
“This new clinic is a natural extension of the long-lasting relationship, and the recently-established Alliance, between Mercy and UI Health Care,” said Tim Charles, president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center. “Mercy’s collaboration with the state’s only comprehensive academic medical center will offer a number of benefits to patients, including improved access and coordination with surgical specialists, to meet the area’s growing needs.”
Dr. Nora Royer is the first general surgeon to join the new Mercy General Surgery Clinic. A board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Royer obtained her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She completed her surgical residency at the University of Iowa. Since the completion of her residency, Dr. Royer has been caring for patients as a general and trauma surgeon in Kansas City, MO. In addition to direct patient care duties, Dr. Royer maintained an academic appointment through the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
Recruitment will continue to add an additional three full-time general surgeons that will exclusively serve Mercy Medical Center.
“UI Health Care and Mercy have a shared commitment and a common vision to provide access to high-quality, patient-centered care here at home, in the Corridor,” said Dr. Jean Robillard, MD, vice president for medical affairs at the University of Iowa. “This collaborative initiative is designed to improve care coordination, patient satisfaction, quality and safety through a multidisciplinary team approach.”
The recruitment of additional surgeons for this group is underway. The Mercy General Surgery Clinic will provide the Cedar Rapids community with a second general surgery group, where only one has existed in the past.
