Spring Allergy Tips
Spring is the time of year for budding trees, warmer temperatures and … seasonal allergies. As the trees bloom and release pollen into the air, those who battle allergies begin to sneeze and sniffle. Unfortunately for allergy sufferers, this spring may be one of the worst seasons in quite some time.
About one in five Americans suffer from seasonal allergies. Among the most common allergy triggers, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, are:
- Tree, grass and weed pollen
- Mold spores
- Dust and cockroach allergens
- Cat, dog and rodent dander
There are many things you can do to reduce your allergen exposure and lessen the symptoms of allergies:
- Keep an eye on the pollen count. Try to stay indoors when it is at its peak.
- Keep windows closed in your home as well as in your car when possible.
- Vacuum often and consider wearing a mask while vacuuming, as this chore can circulate pollen and dust from your carpet and rugs.
- Clean air filters in your home often.
- Remove your shoes immediately when you get home to avoid tracking allergens inside.
- Shower at night to rinse off any pollen from your hair and skin.
If you are still suffering from allergy symptoms, schedule an appointment with your MercyCare family provider. Your provider may suggest using over-the-counter or prescription medications such as oral medication, nasal spray or eye drops. He or she may also refer you to a specialist to determine which allergens you are most affected by and to talk about other treatment options. To find a MercyCare provider, call (319) 369-4444.
