Fight the Flu
As the seasons change, you may be dealing with allergies or back-to-school germs… But it’s time to start thinking ahead to flu season as well. Peak flu season is October through April. Fighting the flu is all about prevention, so here are a few tips for keeping the bug at bay:
- Keep clean
Wash your hands often. Remember to wipe down objects that are touched by many hands, such as computer keyboards, phones, door handles, etc.
- Cover your cough
Cover your mouth with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and avoid using your hands.
- Get your flu shot
This is especially important for people at high risk of developing serious complications from the flu, such as those with certain medical conditions, pregnant woman and people age 65 and older – and those who live with or care for these individuals. It takes about two weeks for the antibodies in the flu vaccine to develop, so the sooner you can get the shot, the better.
If you follow these rules and still end up sick, help protect others by staying home. Stay hydrated, get lots of rest and eat a well-balanced diet to strengthen your immune system and get you back in the game.
