New Graduate Nurse Residency Program
The Nurse Residency Program at Mercy Medical Center facilitates the new graduate’s transition from an entry level, advanced beginner nurse to a competent professional nurse.
As a result of the program, nurses are supported as they develop effective decision-making skills related to clinical judgment and performance, provided clinical leadership at the point of patient care, and incorporate research-based evidence into practice.

Program Objectives
By the end of the residency program, the new graduate nurse will:
- Transition from entry-level, advanced beginner nurse to competent professional nurse
- Develop effective decision-making skills related to clinical judgment and performance
- Provide clinical leadership at the point of patient care
- Strengthen commitment to nursing as a professional career choice
- Incorporate research-based evidence into practice
- Formulate individual career development plans
Participants
- Must be employed at least part-time
- Graduated from an accredited ADN, BSN or MSN-CNL program
- Have a current RN license
- All nurses with less than one year of RN experience hired at Mercy must participate in the Nurse Residency Program.
- New nurses (less than one year of RN experience) hired at Mercy can only enter through participation in the residency program.
- Current Mercy employees who transition into RN role will also participate in the residency program.
Admission
There is no separate application to the Nurse Residency Program. You will automatically start the program (if you have less than one year of RN experience) once you accept an RN position at Mercy Medical Center.
Once you have been interviewed and accept a position at Mercy Medical Center, you will be automatically be enrolled in the residency program.
Structure
The Nurse Residency Program consists of monthly seminars, continuous support from Nurse Residency Coordinator and a celebration at the end of the program. Monthly seminars are approximately 4 hours in length. The topics for discussion are based on the Nurse Executive Center’s 36 new nurse graduate competencies. Face to face interaction and the use of the McIntyre Simulation Lab will be the basis for the seminar sessions.
