Lois W.
Registered Nurse (RN), Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU)
When Lois, RN, joined the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) at Mercy Cedar Rapids last year, she was looking for an inpatient unit that matched her knowledge and skills.
“I have an extensive background in long-term, as well as acute care. My passion is helping patients meet their goals and get back to their life. [Mercy’s IRU] seemed like the perfect fit.”
Lois joined the IRU team as a shift supervisor and found the process of applying and joining Mercy to be easy and simple. “I was really impressed that, during my ‘Discovering Mercy’ class, the entire administrative team attended, introduced themselves and spoke about their ‘Why,’” Lois said.
Now that she has settled into her role as a shift supervisor in her unit, Lois enjoys the “beautiful” IRU facility and speaks highly of her team. “The team on the [IRU] unit is fabulous,” she said. “Everyone works well together, and it is a blessing to see the teamwork.”
Lois also feels supported in her role and has been impressed by Mercy’s commitment to staff on a personal and professional level. “I have had the opportunity to take in-person and online classes to further my knowledge and skills,” she said. “And, the Clinical Ladder program is a good way for staff to improve their clinical skills and get financial benefit for bettering themselves.”
For Lois, it is also the “small” touches that make it a great work environment. For example, because she primarily works an overnight shift, Lois is appreciative that Mercy’s cafeteria is open throughout the night for those who work that shift. “With Mercy’s online ordering, I can have my food made fresh and swing down to pick it up, even at 2 a.m. It’s awesome!” she said.
Working non-traditional hours with about a 30-minute commute, Lois is also appreciative that Mercy provides ample free staff parking, which is just a short walk to the building.
Lois also noted the smaller details that contribute to a positive culture and work environment:
“I have enjoyed participating in the challenges and earning points toward the Mercy Wellness program, which gives staff a discount on health insurance or cash in their pocket,” she said. “I am also really impressed with all the interactive community events that staff are encouraged to participate in. I am just happy to be here!”
