How to Grow Your Self-Confidence
Not having self-confidence is nothing to be ashamed of; it’s just something you can work on. The process of growing your self-confidence is rewarding and beneficial for you to develop as a person. You may have insecurities, but everyone does. Learn how to build your self-confidence below.
If you identify as a pessimist, you can still develop a positive outlook. Every day, think of one thing you like about yourself. This can be linked to your physical or mental attributes. The point is to transition your mind into thinking positively about yourself which can lead to an overall positive outlook on life.
- Actively do something you enjoy
Depending on what you like, you can find an exercise routine that will lift your spirits. Whether you walk, run, swim, lift weights, do yoga or play a sport, being active helps your body regulate your mood, digestion and sleep. Feel the sun on your face as you walk, enjoy the cool water on a hot day, or laugh with your friends when playing a pick-up game. Self-confidence comes from feeling good about yourself and what better way to feel good than to do an activity you like?
You may feel like you’re in a rut, physically and emotionally. So, try something new. Try walking a different route, taking a creative course like painting or cooking, or any activity you wouldn’t normally do. Imagine finding something you didn’t even know you enjoyed. Finding things you’re good at boosts your self-confidence because you feel accomplished.
- Accept compliments, don’t deny them
When someone compliments anything about you – your smile, your clothes, your sense of humor – whatever it is, accept it and say, “Thank you.” Most times, you may shrug it off and not take it seriously, but they took the time to give you a compliment, and you should feel the happiness behind it.
Self-confidence comes from within, so constantly thinking about your failures, something you should do differently, or nagging yourself about household chores is not going to help your confidence. Think about the negative things you tell yourself on a daily basis; would you say those things out loud to someone else? Probably not. Instead, support yourself. Feel proud of your accomplishments and internally congratulate yourself. You may feel silly, but you are your biggest supporter, so you should act like it. Be proud of yourself for your successful presentation at work, making supper for your family or simply, getting through your busy day. Life is hectic, but your brain can be a safe space.
