Overview of Diabetes and Meal Planning

Provided initial information of what diabetes is, diagnosis, different types of diabetes and the basis methods of treatment including meal planning. This class is offered on select Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Call 319-398-6711 for more information.

Individual Meal Plan 

Using your three-day diary, the dietitian will help you develop a personalized meal plan. This class is offered by appointment only. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class Time: 60 minutes

Ups and Downs of Blood Glucose 

"Why did my glucose suddenly go so high (so low)?"  Learn about various life events that affect glucose levels, including activity, foods, stress, hormones, weight changes, medications, etc. This class is offered on select Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Healthy Weight Choices 

Managing weight can be a challenge for people with diabetes. This class focuses on how people have lost weight and kept it off. Learn about calories, fat behavior modification, dining out, and exercise. This class is offered on select Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class Time: 90 minutes

Three Links in the Chain of Prevention 

Learn the daily steps you can take to help prevent long term complications of diabetes, such as heart attacks, strokes, eye problems, kidney failure and nerve damage. This class is offered on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays at various times. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class Time: 90 minutes

Fast Track for People With Diabetes 

Includes the above classes (Ups and Downs, Medications, Healthy Weight Choices, and Three Links in the Chain of Prevention). This class is offered on select Mondays and Tuesdays at various times. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class Time: 150 minutes

Coping Strategies for People with Diabetes 

This class is intended to present a problem-solving approach to diabetes self-care and general health habits to provide participants with useful information to deal with the diagnosis of diabetes and resources available. This class is offered on select Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class Time: 60 minutes

Keeping Your Feet Healthy 

Learn how to properly perform daily foot care routines, as well as what foot problems can develop with diabetes and how those problems can be prevented and/or treated. (Please note: the podiatrist will not be doing a foot check at this class session.) This class is offered on select Fridays at 9:15 a.m. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. About Insulin Pumps

This class is offered on select Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class Time: 120 minutes

Pre-Diabetes 

Taught by a dietitian and exercise specialist. Learn how to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes by introducing better eating and exercise habits. This class is for individuals with risk factors for diabetes such as: fasting blood glucose levels greater than 100 and/or family history of diabetes. No physician referral is required. Offered on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons Call 319-398-6711 for more information. Class time: 2 hours

Gestational Diabetes

Ongoing follow up with nurse and dietitian to ensure blood glucose levels are in target. Insulin management also available when prescribed by your physician. Initial class offered every Thursday. Call 319-398-6711 for more information.

Insulin Adjustments

Joslin offers insulin adjustment appointments upon referral from a physician. A nurse educator will work with you to determine insulin doses that will best meet your needs. Because carbohydrate counting is such an important aspect of diabetes management, a medical nutrition therapy session is also included in this service. Call 319-398-6711 for more information.
